Who actually knows the true story of St. Valentine?
Valentines Day is of course traditionally a celebration of the patron saint of love; but in reality it should be in celebration of being 'a totally badass Christian'.
Claudius Gothicus, the Roman Emperor of the day had begun cancelling marriages and engagements in Rome. At the time, his army was suffering losses and he beleived that marriage had a negative effect on his men. Thus, he outlawed marriage. Valentine however, continued secretly marrying Christian couples and helping Christians who were at the time being persecuted by Cladius in Rome. Helping Christians at this time was considered a crime. Once found out, he was quickly imprisoned.
However Cladius took a liking to his prisoner. That was, until Valentine refused to deny Christ in front of the Emperor and instead tried to convert Cladius. Outraged at Valentines actions, he condemned him to death. First beaten with clubs and stoned, he proved a hardy prisoner and refused to die under the brutal treatment. He was later beheaded, still refusing to deny Christ.
The 'holiday of love' has descended into Western mass-marketing facade over the real meaning behind Valentines day - Stand up for your faith in Christ.
